So John, Where does your story begin?
1:43 John was born in Virginia and it took him about 45 years to get back ___________ to his STOMPING GROUND.
4:03 John had inspired me many years ago in the PRACTICE OF LISTENING, like I had never _______________ before.
4:51 John’s VISION FOR SPEAKING AND LISTENING is for life long _____________. Because if you apply yourself to these two skills it begins a process which will never leave you. They are two of the most fundamental life skills.
6:17 LIFE IS ABOUT ___________________ and friendships and partnerships and developing your own leadership. All of these “ships” are based upon communication.
7:11 Subtitle of John’s book is YOU DON’T LISTEN, AND YOU TALK TO MUCH. Are the nations of world listening to each other? Or is anyone listening to anyone for that matter? Anybody married, have children? Everyone’s biggest complaint is, a lack of listening and being…
8:51 It’s SPEAKING AND LISTENING because if we can improve these __________, our relationships flourish, our friendships evolve. We get more of them. We enter into them easier. These are simply skills, yet we generally have no formal education to take these skills to the next level.
9:47 We each HAVE A DESPERATE NEED to be ________________ by other people and to understand other people. We all have this like post-it note on our foreheads which reads, “Know Me.”
10:15 THIS IS LIFE, We don’t live it alone. We live it in relationship, friendship, partnership with others because…
10:27 How do we MEASURE our speaking and listening? To know that we are _____________ it in the direction of our choosing?
12:17 John’s course offers that there are 11 REASONS WHY PEOPLE DON’T FULLY & TRULY HEAR EACH OTHER. Examples _________ Mind-reading, Day Dreaming, Judgement, Editorial Comment & Interpreting for example…
13:09 Anais Nin, FRENCH ARTIST AND POET, “We don’t see things as they are, we see things as we are”.
14:27 We Hear 30-50,000 words every day, THAT’S THE NOISE, it’s not what’s really being said. We are constantly __________________ what is being said, what the person means by what is being said and filtering it through our own experience.
15:00 YOU WERE NEVER TAUGHT anything different. It’s not how we grew up. Parents often __________ simply, “Listen to me and do what I tell you”. Parents do that.
15:33 LISTENING CAN HEAL, John then asks if I will listen to him reading a story, because…
16:03 – 22:43 John reads LISTEN, SOMEONE’S LIFE MAY DEPEND ON IT by Shirley Ferguson (Transcript of the story can be read here: http://transformingmlm.typepad.com/itstime/2010/01/listen-someones-life-may-depend-on-it.html )
22:47 John has trouble KEEPING IT TOGETHER when reading the story because it’s such a connecting sense of the power of speaking and listening, and the price of not listening because…
23:17 We can all relate to each of the characters in the story, especially the babe in the crib. Wanting our parents to SEE US, our whole _________ wanting our parents to KNOW US. To HEAR US as John has said.
23:43 John as a parent has 4 children. His joke is that he had to MAKE HIS OWN GRAND CHILDREN. He is _____________ and devoted to having his children be heard. Asking them what they think and not telling them what he thinks, unless their safety is at risk.
25:01 What he shares is, “Well, here is what I think, here’s what I would do. But, I am not you. You do it. You think it. You feel it. Let me know if I can help.”
25:21 It’s all about _______________ their humanity, their growth and their BRINGING THEMSELVES TO LIFE fully and completely. And that’s what we do when we truly speak and listen to another person.
25:43 Dr. Carol McCall taught John that when people are truly heard, THEY CAN BE HEALED
25:49 LISTENING is an act of Love…
